Our Book Launch at Book Expo NY

Authors, to grow attendance to book signings, try tying in your even to a larger event. Here’s our example.

We asked BenBella Books, our publisher, to release our book to coincide with the largest North American gathering of book trade professionals: Book Expo (BEA). http://www.bookexpoamerica.com  I’ve bounced with the show to different  BEA locations like Washington DC, Los Angeles, Chicago and New Orleans, where James Brown played to a small group of publishers to promote his book. (Wish you youtube had been invented: not known for dance moves, publishing execs and editors suddenly found their groove that night.)

The hearbteat of publishing remains in New York, the location that has now claimed Book Expo. BEA is the place for publishers, editors, marketing departments, booksellers, and tv and media execs to convene. Foremost thinkers and creators in publishing as well as celebrities, actors, comedians, and musicians promote their new books at BEA, and provide an opportunity for an author like me to autograph a book at the show with a wide audience. It’s worth checking out.

UPublishU is an adjunct conference for self-published authors. The 2014 BEA has attracted names like Anjelica Houston, Dick Cavett,  Martin Short, Patrick Harris and more. The big news for me is the chance to finally meet my coauthor Mike McCallister for the first time.

Try to find upcoming events and future conferences in your area or where you’re willing to travel to and combine like interests with the subject of your book. Show attendees are thirsty; an invitation for a glass of wine or champagne after pounding a conference center floor at a civilized gathering like a  book signing is pure Zen. Freebies and publicity photos are universal gifts that encourage your event to get tweeted, posted, and remembered leading to book sales. So give, in the form of books, wine, and freebies donated by a local sponsor  (who you may do business with already) in exchange for some signage works wonders.
